Mathews reappointed Sri Lanka's limited-overs captain

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka Cricket reappointed Angelo Mathews as captain of its limited overs teams on Tuesday as it aims to build a side for next year's cricket World Cup.

Dinesh Chandimal will continue to hold the test captaincy while Mathews will take charge of the one-day international and Twenty20 international teams.

Mathews resigned as captain in all three formats last July after Sri Lanka's first-ever one-day international series defeat against Zimbabwe. Since then Sri Lanka has struggled to find a stable captain and has had four in the last six months.

Mathews will lead the team for the upcoming tri-nation series in Bangladesh starting later this month also involving Zimbabwe.

Chandimal, who had been overlooked for limited-overs matches recently, was recalled to the 16-member squad to tour Bangladesh along with Kusal Mendis, who was rested for the recent test and limited-over matches in India.

Shehan Madushanka, a young fast bowler with just three first-class matches, was also included in the squad after the 22-year-old impressed new head coach Chandika Hathurusingha.

The tri-nation series begins on January 17.

Squad: Angelo Mathews (captain), Upul Tharanga, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Perera, Thisara Perera, Asela Gunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Shehan Madushanka, Akila Dananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan, Wanidu Hasaranga.
