Saudi-Turkish team inspects consulate where writer vanished

Oct 15, 2018

ISTANBUL — Turkish and Saudi investigators on Monday began conducting what Turkish officials have said is a joint "inspection" of the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, where Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi went missing nearly two weeks ago. The team arrived by unmarked police car and said nothing to journalists waiting outside as international concern continues to grow over the writer's disappearance. American lawmakers have threatened tough punitive action against the Saudis, and Germany, France and Britain have jointly called for a "credible investigation" into Khashoggi's disappearance. A Foreign Ministry official had earlier said the team would visit the diplomatic post Monday....

The team arrived Monday afternoon to the consulate in Istanbul's upscale 4th Levent neighborhood as journalists filmed and shot photographs of their arrival. It's unclear what kind of search the officials will conduct and if it will involve forensics, especially since Khashoggi disappeared on Oct. 2. A...

Sri Lanka cricket great Jayasuriya charged with corruption

Oct 15, 2018

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Sri Lanka great Sanath Jayasuriya became one of the most high-profile figures embroiled in corruption in cricket when he was charged Monday with two counts of disrupting an investigation. Jayasuriya was a star of the Sri Lanka team that won the Cricket World Cup in 1996 during a playing career that spanned 22 years and took in 110 tests and 445 one-day internationals. He later served on the Sri Lankan parliament from 2010-15, and became the national team's chairman of selectors. His reputation could be tarnished, though, after the International Cricket Council said the 49-year-old...

Recovery of Nepal climbers delayed by mountain's remoteness

Oct 15, 2018

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Rescuers hampered by difficult, remote terrain took two days to recover the bodies of nine climbers, including one of the world's best, who hoped to map a new route to a Himalayan peak in Nepal that hasn't been scaled in eight years. Local police chief Bir Bahadur Budamagar said a group of villagers reached the climbers' camp site on Saturday on Gurja Himal, a less-popular but pristine mountain in the shadow of Dhaulagiri, the world's seventh-highest peak and a day's walk from the nearest village. The climbers included Kim Chang-ho, the first South Korean to summit all...

India's accused minister files defamation suit amid protests

Oct 15, 2018

NEW DELHI — India's junior external affairs minister filed a criminal case for defamation in court Monday against a woman who has accused him of sexual harassment, his attorney said. Minister M.J. Akbar filed a case against journalist Priya Ramani, the first of more than a dozen women to allege harassment in recent weeks from his days as a newspaper editor, Akbar's lawyer Sandeep Kapur told The Associated Press. The move came as dozens of members of the opposition India National Congress party's youth wing clashed with police outside Akbar's New Delhi home, demanding his resignation. On Sunday, Akbar denied...
