Pakistan's Imran Khan sworn in as prime minister

Aug 19, 2018

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan's cricket star-turned-politician Imran Khan was sworn in as prime minister on Saturday despite protests by opposition parties, which accuse the security services of intervening on his behalf in last month's elections. Khan' s Tehreek-e-Insaf party won the most seats in the July 25 national elections but fell short of an outright majority. It allied with independents to form a coalition, and Khan was elected by the National Assembly on Friday. Khan had campaigned on promises to combat Pakistan's endemic corruption and break powerful landowners' monopoly on political power. Opposition parties have held regular protests since last month's...

Saudi Arabia prepares for the annual Muslim hajj pilgrimage

Aug 19, 2018

MECCA, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia is preparing to host the annual hajj pilgrimage beginning Sunday, as over 2 million Muslim faithful are ready to take part in the ultraconservative kingdom. The pilgrimage represents one of the five pillars of Islam and is required of all able-bodied Muslims once in their life. In recent weeks, the faithful have arrived in Mecca from across the world, all chanting "Labayk Allahuma Labayk," or "Here I am, God, answering your call. Here I am." The hajj offers pilgrims an opportunity to feel closer to God amid the Muslim world's many challenges, including the...

Turkey's president says country will defy economic threats

Aug 19, 2018

ISTANBUL — Turkey's president said Saturday his country will stand strong against an "attempted economic coup" amid heightened tensions with the United States. Recep Tayyip Erdogan told thousands of supporters in Ankara that the country was being "threatened by the economy, sanctions, foreign currency, interest rates and inflation." "We tell them that we see their game and we challenge them," he said. Turkey is reeling from a massive sell-off of its currency as Washington imposed sanctions and threatened new ones if an American pastor under house arrest isn't released. Evangelical pastor Andrew Craig Brunson faces up to 35 years in...

Taliban say no peace with 'occupation,' want US talks

Aug 19, 2018

KABUL, Afghanistan — The leader of the Taliban said Saturday there will be no peace in Afghanistan as long as the foreign "occupation" continues, reiterating the group's position that the 17-year war can only be brought to an end through direct talks with the United States. In a message released in honor of the Eid al-Adha holiday, Maulvi Haibatullah Akhunzadah said the group remains committed to "Islamic goals," the sovereignty of Afghanistan and ending the war. The Taliban have had a major resurgence in recent years, seizing districts across the country and regularly carrying out large-scale attacks. Earlier this month,...

IS deadly new front in Pakistan's decades-old terror war

Aug 19, 2018

DHABEJI, Pakistan — Hafeez Nawaz was 20 years old when he left his religious school in Karachi to join the Islamic State group in Afghanistan. Three years later he was back in Pakistan to carry out a deadly mission: With explosives strapped to his body, he blew himself up in the middle of an election rally last month, killing 149 people and wounding 300 others. The attack in southwestern Baluchistan province near the Afghan border just days before Pakistan's July 25 parliamentary elections has cast an unwelcome spotlight on Nawaz's tiny village of Dhabeji, where the presence of an IS...
