Sep 20, 2018

ISLAMABAD — Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has written to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, seeking to resolve outstanding disputes between the two nuclear-armed nations, including the issue of the divided region of Kashmir, an official said Thursday. Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Faisal tweeted that Khan's letter reciprocated Indian Premier Narendra Modi's call earlier this month for "meaningful and constructive engagement." Khan conceded that relations between Pakistan and India are challenging but said issues must be resolved peacefully. "We owe it to our people, especially the future generations, to peacefully resolve all outstanding issues including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute,"...

Turkey expects lower growth amid currency turmoil

Sep 20, 2018

ISTANBUL — Turkey expects lower economic growth in coming years amid concerns over inflation and a sliding currency. Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak presented the government's economic plan Thursday, targeting 2.3 percent growth for 2019 and 3.5 percent for 2020. The previous target was 5.5 percent for both years. Albayrak estimated inflation in 2018 would be 20.8 percent. The Turkish lira has lost around 40 percent against the dollar so far this year, sharply raising the price of imports. The central bank last week raised interest rates sharply, from 17.75 percent to 24 percent, to try to stem inflation...

Pakistan's ex-PM Sharif freed after court suspends sentence

Sep 20, 2018

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law were released from prison Wednesday after a court suspended their sentences and granted them bail pending their appeals hearings. The Islamabad High Court made the decision after the Sharifs petitioned to appeal their sentences, which were handed down by an anti-graft tribunal earlier this year in a corruption case against them. The three were released from a prison in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. The development is the latest twist in a series of scandals involving the former prime minister, beginning with his ouster from office last year,...

India beats Pakistan by 8 wickets in Asia Cup

Sep 20, 2018

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — India was rarely tested in a dominating eight-wicket win over traditional rival Pakistan in their group match of the Asia Cup Wednesday. At Dubai International Stadium, captain Sarfraz Ahmed's decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired when a disciplined Indian bowling attack wrapped up the Pakistan innings for a meagre 162 in 43.1 overs. India's reply was led by its rampant captain Rohit Sharma, who raced to 52 in just 39 balls and added 86 runs in 13 overs with Shikhar Dhawan for the opening stand. They achieved the target in the 29th...
